Cover letters are an essential part of your resume application process. A cover letter is the voice of your resume and you should always submit a cover letter with your resume. A resume is essentially a list of your skills and experience without much room for situation specific details. The cover letter, however, allows you to share with a prospective company in sentence format why you are interested in their company or open position.
A cover letter allows you to explain why you are looking for a new position, specifically what you can offer to them and it is also the perfect place to explain any gaps in employment or other unusual, red flag issues within your resume.
A cover letter should also be specifically addressed to the company to which you are applying and to their specific opening, as applicable.
A cover letter should be consistently formatted to match your resume and should remain consistent to the content within your resume.
